Whimsy and silliness are a good counterpoint. Did you ever see Sophie's Choice? An utterly dark movie, wrenching in the worst kind of way. There is exactly one joke. Stingo, Sophie's young journalist friend, is wearing a seersucker jacket. In her thick and deliberate accent, Sophie tells Stingo, "I like your ____sucker." (Fill in blank with synonym for "rooster.") The audience really needed the release.
